Quick answer (USDA FSIS)
- 2 hours: refrigerate turkey, stuffing, gravy, and other perishables within 2 hours of cooking (1 hour if above 90°F). Throw out anything left out longer.
- 3 to 4 days in the fridge. For Thanksgiving on Thu Nov 26, 2026, that means eat or freeze by Sun Nov 29 to Mon Nov 30.
- Freezer: USDA's turkey guide says use frozen turkey, stuffing, and gravy leftovers within 2 to 6 months for best quality. Its general leftovers page says 3 to 4 months. Frozen food stays safe indefinitely but gets drier.
- Reheat to 165°F and bring gravy to a rolling boil.
Your Thanksgiving 2026 leftover dates
| Day | What to do |
|---|---|
| Thu Nov 26, within 2 hrs of dinner | Carve the turkey, pack it into shallow containers, and refrigerate |
| Fri Nov 27 – Sat Nov 28 | Eat leftovers; freeze what you won't get to |
| Sun Nov 29 – Mon Nov 30 | Last days for refrigerated leftovers (3–4 days); freeze or toss |
Dates are counted from USDA's 3–4 day guidance with Thanksgiving as day 0. When in doubt, throw it out.
How to store them (USDA)
- Cut the turkey off the bone. Slice the breast meat; legs and wings can stay whole. Don't refrigerate a whole bird.
- Shallow containers. Split big batches of stuffing, potatoes, and gravy into smaller containers so they cool to 40°F or below fast.
- Hot food can go straight in. You don't have to wait for it to cool on the counter.
- Wrap well. Use airtight containers or wrap to keep out bacteria and fridge odors.
Reheating, thawing and refreezing (USDA)
- Cooked turkey can be eaten cold or reheated. In the oven, set it no lower than 325°F, add a little broth, cover, and heat to 165°F.
- In the microwave, cover and rotate, let it stand, and check 165°F in several spots because microwaves leave cold spots.
- Thaw frozen leftovers in the fridge, in cold water, or in the microwave. You can also reheat soups and casseroles straight from frozen.
- Leftovers thawed in the fridge can be refrozen. Leftovers reheated to 165°F can be refrozen too.

Our take: plan leftovers before dinner
- Set out containers and labels (dish + date) before guests arrive, so packing up is a 10-minute job and not a midnight chore.
- Send guests home with to-go containers on day one. That's the easiest way to beat the 3–4 day clock.
- Freeze turkey in meal-size portions with a splash of broth or gravy so it doesn't dry out.
FAQ
How long are Thanksgiving leftovers good for?
USDA FSIS says to use refrigerated turkey, stuffing, and gravy within 3 to 4 days. For Thanksgiving on Thursday, Nov 26, 2026, that's Sunday, Nov 29 to Monday, Nov 30. Freeze anything you won't eat by then.
How long can Thanksgiving food sit out?
No more than 2 hours at room temperature, or 1 hour above 90°F, according to USDA FSIS. Discard turkey, stuffing, and gravy left out longer.
Can you freeze Thanksgiving leftovers?
Yes. USDA's turkey guide says to use frozen turkey, stuffing, and gravy within 2 to 6 months for best quality. Frozen food stays safe indefinitely but loses moisture and flavor over time.
What temperature should leftovers be reheated to?
USDA says reheat leftovers to 165°F measured with a food thermometer, and bring sauces, soups, and gravies to a rolling boil.
Can I put a whole turkey in the fridge?
USDA recommends cutting turkey into smaller pieces before refrigerating: slice the breast meat, while legs and wings can stay whole. Smaller pieces cool faster.
